The best advice for writers that I have found is from Stephan King’s memior “On Writing.” In it he says something to the effect of “If you want to be a writer you have to write.” Meaning you have to write every day. It’s not as much about what you write but that you do it. Even just writing in a journal can make you a better writer. So here it is. My gym for writing. The way in which I will exercise my abilities and to start off, here are a few things about myself:
* I have absolutely terrible punctuation skills. It’s true. My motto in high school was “Someday I’ll be a professional writer and my editor will do it for me” It was just an excuse for me not being able to remember all the comma rules. I’m the worst copy editor ever so expect a lot of mistakes in that area. Of course if you are able to pick out my punctuation mistakes then I probably have a bigger problem.
* I love animals. That sounds lame. That kind of sounds like I’m about to run out and get a big horse or bunny tattoo on my ass. What I mean is I work in PetCo so I am around them all the time. I also happen to enjoy cats and reptiles in particular. I have two cats (Sir William J. Kitty and Baby Kitty), a snake (Dexter) and two mice (Drusilla and Darla). I am sure more will be added later.
* Like I said I work at PetCo. I am, in fact, a Companion Animal Specialist. This is a fancy title for “Person who cleans up poop and shoves medicine down sick animals throats, though I try not to shove but rather gently coerce. Mainly I get stuck with the Small Animals so you should also expect the trials and tribulations of hamsters to work their way into my writing.
* I’m trying to document my life. All through college I didn’t take many pictures and only kept a journal sporadically. I hope I can keep better track. I need to start carrying my camera with me so I can take pictures of things I want to write about.
* I love art. All forms of art really. Right now I am about to start this thing where you draw a self portrait for every day of the year. I also want to take pictures of myself to show how I change. Right now I need a haircut.
* Sometimes this will be completely mundane but I think everyone is mundane in their own eyes so maybe my life will be interesting to someone. The narcissist in me hopes so. Mostly I guess it doesn’t matter. At least I will know that I was here.

I was just searching wordpress for blogs on Buddhism and found your page. Love the idea of taking a photgraph of your self every day. Digital cameras make that easier, I should know, I am (or maybe was) a photographic artist, but concentrating on writng now. You could run all the images together in video editing software and end up with a short movie of your hair growing, cool!
I have been vegetarian for 15 years now, mainly because I did not like the stuff that gets put into meat and also from an ethical point of view. I have suffered with chronic fatigue for which some have wagged their finger at me and said eat meat, but why should an animal die to cure me, plus it is definately a healthier diet, dental bills seem to go down, less acidic I guess, eat seeds, flax oil, nuts and stuff and that should provide enough protein and omega oils, etc.
I see you do yoga too, keeps me sane in a crazy world!!
